How to make Wudu (ablution)

  1. Intention: Intend purification and say Bismillah.
  2. Hands: Wash hands to the wrists three times.
  3. Mouth: Rinse the mouth three times.
  4. Nose: Rinse the nose gently three times.
  5. Face: Wash the entire face three times. (one of the four Hanafi obligatory acts)
  6. Arms: Wash the right arm including the elbow three times, then the left. (one of the four Hanafi obligatory acts)
  7. Head and ears: Wipe the head with wet hands once; wipe the ears. (one of the four Hanafi obligatory acts)
  8. Feet: Wash the right foot including the ankle three times, then the left, including between the toes. (one of the four Hanafi obligatory acts)

Ensure water reaches the required areas. The four Hanafi obligatory acts are washing the face, washing both arms including elbows, wiping at least a quarter of the head, and washing both feet including ankles.

Wudu is generally broken by urination, defecation, passing wind, deep sleep and other causes. In Hanafi fiqh, flowing blood and a mouthful of vomit can also break Wudu.

Ghusl has separate rules when required. If water cannot be used, ask about Tayammum.
